Born in 1960, in Harlem, NY. One of 11 children his older brother gave him a bicycle in middle school and his life would change forever. Nicknamed “The Cheetah” for his blazing natural speed as a Bicycle Messenger in Manhattan he rose through the ranks of Amateur Cycling in the United States earning a spot on the National team under legendary coach Eddy Borysewicz.
Nelson "Nelly" became the first African-American to win an Olympic medal in cycling. His silver medal from the 1984 Los Angeles Games, World Championship Gold in 1985 and a 10+ year Pro career in Japan and Europe make him one of Cycling's most sought after speaker and spokesperson.
Although retired from Pro cycling Nelson is very active in the sport as a spokesman for Gran Fondo New York and Brand Ambassador for Canyon Bicycles and many others. His Ride with Nelly events are always well attended and his warm and engaging personality and love for people always shines through.
